Evergreen Games has been operating mostly silently in the six months since we won the Panda 25 in 25 contest. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t been operating! There has been a ton of work going on behind the scenes as we have been working to transition from game designers to game publishers. It turns out that there is a lot to learn!
So today I’ll be giving you an update on the things we’ve done, the things we’re learning, and the things we don’t yet know!
The Game
Spyre is our game that won the contest, but there’s more to the story on the origin of Spyre. We’ll write a more in-depth blog post about that another day. Teasers coming soon!
The Company
I founded Evergreen Games, LLC last Thanksgiving. For those of you not in the United States, Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November to give thanks for the harvest. Giving thanks is a theme that Evergreen wants to pursue as a business value.
I founded the company with a simple tagline:
Putting games on tables and smiles on faces.
I know it’s a bit cheesy, but board gaming to me is about community. So the idea of people having a good time together at the game table is a big deal to me!
Here’s our long term vision as a board game publisher:
- Saplings: publish three small, accessible games each year
- Lodgepoles: publish two medium-sized games each year
- Sequoias: publish one large, heavy-weight game each year
This model will take a couple of years to build up to. And on the way we will start learning all the pitfalls of publishing with our own games. I don’t want to put any contracted designer at any risk until I understand what I’m doing.
The Plan
We are looking to Kickstart Spyre later this year. We are eyeing the late September timeframe. Some of you might ask why we would Kickstart if we won that contest. It’s pretty simple… we don’t want to print too many, nor do we want to print too few. Kickstarting is of great value to publishers since it allows a publisher to gauge the market and make the right decision on how many copies to print.
We have nearly wrapped up development on the game. We just have some balancing we are finalizing. In the meantime, we have hired an artist and a graphic designer and good progress is being made.
We have also received an updated manufacturing quote and are working on some potential stretch goals to enhance gameplay. The numbers are coming in pretty good. But having the quote is what we need to understand how the number of copies allows for those enhancements. Even without any unlocked stretch goals, this game will be a really awesome game for all different types of gamers! Please visit the Spyre game page to learn more!
We would love if you followed along as we learn all this great stuff! Thanks for reading, and I promise we’ve got a lot more awesome content coming your way!
Cheers,
Ed
